Originally produced on Broadway in 1944, On The Town was Leonard Bernstein’s first musical. Written in collaboration with the legendary team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green (who supplied both the book and lyrics in addition to appearing in the original production), On The Town tells the story of three young sailors on a 24-hour New York City shore leave during World War II and the three women who steal their hearts.
Bayou City Concert Musicals has brought together a talented and energetic cast to bring this classic of the American musical theatre to life. Will Luton, Kregg Allen Dailey, and Adam Gibbs are the three sailors and Melissa Pritchett, Susan Draper, and Tamara Siler are the three women who make their liberty the most memorable 24 hours of their lives. The supporting cast features many of Houston’s favorite performers, including Grace Givens, Frank York, and Richard Calvert.
BCCM Artistic Director Paul Hope will share the directing duties this year with popular Houston actor Philip Lehl. Art Yelton is musical director with Dominique Røyem once again on the conductor’s podium. On The Town is the most dance-heavy show BCCM has ever produced and we are pleased to announce that former Houston Ballet principal dancer Krissy Richmond is returning to BCCM to choreograph the five ballets.
If you’ve seen the movie version, you have NOT seen On The Town. The Hollywood types of the 1940s thought American audiences weren’t ready for Bernstein’s music and so most of it (with the notable exception of New York, New York) was excised before production even began.
